Dave Siegel Interviews Available!

Friday, July 30th, 2010

We’re glad to announce the availability of the much anticipated
/
/Dave Siegel Interviews.
/
/
/
/These interviews were done with many of the OTR stars in
/
/the 70′s by telephone, with Dave holding a cassette microphone
/
/up to the telephone receiver.
/
/
/
/Researcher Doug H. did a magnificent job of not only encoding
/
/them, but doing a yeoman’s job of deleting pops, clicks, and
/
/cleaning up the sound in general.
/
/
/
/The OTRR has had these interviews in hand for a long time,
/
/but Dave requested that we not release them until  his book
/
/about the interviews had been published.
/
/
/
/The book – ‘Remembering Radio – An Oral History’, can be
/
/purchased from Bear Manor @ Bearmanormedia.com for
/
/only $24.95.
/
/
/
/Dave had some help from Melanie Aultman, whom some
/
/of you know from the Cincy Con.
/
/
/
/The book not only contain the text versions of the interviews,
/
/but also a guide to over 1300 more interviews, in which more
/
/than 990 radio personalities share their first-hand accounts
/
/of the shows they were associated with.
/
/
/
/This is a OTRR recommended book!

Links Fixed

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Thanks to the hard work of our able Librarian, Kurt S., all the
/
/broken links are fixed and everything is back to normal.
/
/
/
/The problems did have a bright side to them, though.  Kurt
/
/and I were able to do some ‘behind-the-scenes’ work that
/
/hopefully insure a much more smoother running of the
/
/Library, at least for the Librarians.

Technical difficulties

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Got a message from Jim B last night indicating widespread problems here.  While I’m not yet in possession of all the details, I do see that the Index pages containing series links seem to have been reverted to older, out-of-date versions.  Your mileage may vary.  Unfortunately, I have a day job and that day is just beginning so it may be a bit before further clarification is available.  In the meanwhile, surf our pages with caution and patience, please.

A big deal: The Little Things in Life

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

The Library today makes a rare foray into the years after 1962 and the end of the Golden Age.  We’ve an excellent reason for doing so!
/
/
/
/Some of you are no doubt big fans of the Ethel and Albert show, the late 1940s program often considered a pioneering effort in situation comedy, authored by and starring Peg Lynch (who’s still very much with us and was appearing at conventions as recently as 2008).  You may also recall that with the tremendous assistance of friend and member Gary Smith, we were able to expand our collection of those dramatically and improve the Otter logs quite a bit as well.
/
/
/
/Peg’s radio career continued for several decades, and her brand of humor centered on everyday events remained of interest to networks long after most of her colleagues and competitors had vanished from the airwaves.  Besides a reworking of the E&A format for CBS’ 1957-60 The Couple Next Door, there were Ethel and Albert reprises on NBC’s Monitor (1963-65) and on NPR in 1972.  The final flowering of her signature format, the daily trials of a husband and wife, was the series The Little Things in Life, which ran in 1975-76.  All in all, it’s in many ways a very direct extension of the Ethel and Albert program created thirty years earlier… and thus I think it only makes sense to give it a home and some well-deserved exposure on our site.  When I woke up this morning, there were 4 examples of this show in the Library… but by mid-afternoon you will be able to find the COMPLETE run of 150 episodes!   Thanks again to Gary for his sweat equity and also to Jim B. and Tony J. for their support… and if you see Peg in your travels, say a warm hello and express your appreciation and ours, too.

STSS Redux… including new Carlton E. Morse interviews

/Larry Gassman has been good enough to send us a baker’s dozen of his Same Time, Same Station interview sessions from the 1970s… seven noticeable sound upgrades and six entirely new recordings.  Of perhaps greatest interest is a 3-part, 3-hour session with the legendary Carlton E. Morse.  Come and get ‘em!

Huge load of small improvements

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Finally finished cleaning up a major hunk o’ miscellany this weekend and it’s all out there for your perusal.  In general I’ll just be posting a long list of:  all-new series and the related show titles, new shows in existing series, and upgrades to pre-existing files.  Two new series I’ll make special mention of:
/
/
/
/– I had a single episode of Al Jolson’s Lifebuoy Show from 1937 passed on to me, and in checking it out I noted that there were a dozen more listed in Goldin.  Well, love Jolson or loathe him, his recordings from that era are still well worth presenting here, and after a little digging around I found 2 more buried in our own Shell Chateau certified series… and then some good friends at Cobalt Club made six more available, so we’ve got a nice little run of those for you.
/
/
/
/– I had a single episode of a show called Double Feature starring Jackie Gleason for some years now… and then the Purchasing Group came up with a couple more, taking the show out of “Singles and Doubles” catch-all status.  Well, we’ve added these as a new series, but changed the title, as a little research showed that “Double Feature” was given as a title for AFRS rebroadcasts but “The Jackie Gleason – Les Tremayne Show” is what’s given in Goldin and elsewhere, so that’s what we’ll be using.  Logs for this show and the Jolson show will be added to Otter shortly.
