A brouhaha in the Balkans and a bevy of Bing

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

First off tonight, by the agency of Mr. Terry Caswell (who looks after our publication archive so masterfully), we have added a South African series titled Vale of Darkness, a 30-part WWII tale of intrigue in Yugoslavia .  Thanks, Terry.

/Lastly, Andrew “Hawkeye” Steinberg somehow noted that the new Fred Allen – Linit excerpt we provided a few days ago was 48 seconds shorter than a copy in his possession– no small thing as it turns out because the closing skit actually gets a chance to finish properly!  So we were grateful to get that indeed, and the newer copy is in place.

Bing and Fred and George and Gracie. Again.

Burns and Allen:  Did some careful listening and comparing and have determined that we do NOT have the February 26, 1950 rehearsal recording of “Preparing the Income Taxes” as listed in Goldin, but rather the regular March 1 broadcast as reflected in Haendiges.  The Library’s file has been renamed accordingly.  However, we could really use that rehearsal program.  If anyone has a VERIFIABLE copy of the 2/26/50 episode and can describe (besides having a length of between 32 and 33 minutes) what it is that makes Goldin’s description of the show as “possibly an unedited tape or a rehearsal” credible, PLEASE get in touch with us to offer the recording and relevant information to the Library so we can all have a listen!
/
/
/
/Fred Allen:  We’ve just put up a new partial Linit Bath Club revue program from January 8, 1933.  That series now goes from 2 shows to 3.  OK, 2 1/2.
/
/
/
/Bing Crosby – Philco Radio Time:  Hope you’ve enjoyed a few of the new Kraft episodes starring Bing that were added a few days back.   We’ll be adding some more Cros over the next days and weeks, and a special thanks goes to Mike Stevens, a guy who has been a big help this past year in putting me in the way of a lot of this material.  Today, we’re putting up the last 12 shows needed to make our Philco stash complete at 108 programs in total.   Here’s the latest fills, including LOADS of Peggy Lee, which can never be bad:
/
/
/

/
/

 47/03/12   22  Peggy Lee
/
/ 48/12/01   82  Bob Crosby and Peggy Lee
/
/ 49/01/19   89  Hattie McDaniel and Cast of Beulah
/
/ 49/03/16   97  Louis Armstrong
/
/ 49/03/23   98  Ethel Merman
/
/ 49/03/30   99  Dennis Day
/
/ 49/04/06  100  Jimmy Stewart and Kay Starr
/
/ 49/04/13  101  Peggy Lee and Gonzaga Glee Club
/
/ 49/04/20  102  Rudy Vallee and Walter O’Keefe
/
/ 49/05/04  104  Carole Richards and Alec Templeton
/
/ 49/05/11  105  Alec Templeton and Peggy Lee
/
/ 49/05/25  107  Dorothy Kirsten

We are extremely disinterested to announce…

… that the 6 remaining known episodes of “Candid Microphone” have been added.  This is in my opinion a truly reprehensible program, but some of you may be cretinous enough to enjoy it, what do I know?  In any event, I thought it was important to make it clear that I won’t just work on my own personal interests, as this is intended to be as complete a repository as possible… and I assure you that this is NOT one of them.  So, enjoy.  Or not.  Whatever.

A timely news program for you Sunday punditry addicts…

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

/
/
/
/… timely except that it’s 72 years old!  Today we add the December 23, 1937 edition of America’s Town Hall Meeting of the Air.  Topic:  “What System of Medical Care Shall We Have?”.  Enjoy it, gang… and feel free to comment, but should you feel so inspired keep it intelligent and apolitical.  We won’t be very kind to flamers and agitators around these here parts.
/
/
/
/ALSO:  There’s been some much-needed housecleaning in the Burns and Allen folder, and in the process we’ve added 5 new shows for you:
/
/
/
/ 37/10/11   27  Bob Burns Substitutes
/
/ 43/09/21    4  Guest – Ray Milland
/
/ 44/12/19   18  Christmas Presents
/
/ 44/12/26   19  Gracie Hires A Drama Coach For George
/
/ 48/01/29   22  Separate Vacations
/
/
/
/Enjoy what’s left of your weekend (and to you retired ladies and gents to whom it’s all the same, an extremely jealous raspberry).

A couple of new shows…

/
/
/
/…from the inimitable Fred Allen.  Short but sweet, tonight we offer you:
/
/
/
/Fred Allen – Salad Bowl Revue
/
/
/
/Fred Allen – Sal Hepatica Revue
/
/
/
/Some fine listening here.

Geez, what a reception.

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

I feel like a bad Catskills comic, swathed in sour cigar smoke and drenched in flop sweat.  “Aw, c’mon folks, I know you’re out there… I can hear you breathing!”  Ah, well.  Now I see what Jim was dealing with.  Come on, you guys, howzabout a little school spirit out there?  Somebody in this class besides Willie has got to raise their hand once in a while….
/
/
/
/Maybe THIS’LL get a rise outa you bums:
/
/
/
/Woo-Woo!!!
/
/
/
/(That was my Dennis Day impersonation… what’d you think?)
/
/
/
/OK, OK…there’s some meat in this post too.  I dumped the contents of Kraft Music Hall and replaced it with files named to the latest Otter standards… in the process taking the Library stash from 158 to 229 files… that’s 71 new shows for you math-challenged folks, almost a 50% improvement.  Hope you like ‘em.
/
/
/
/Also:  a big thanks to Andrew Steinberg (aka Nightkey for those of you who travel in the more desirable circles), who’s been working his keester off in the interests of keeping the Library stacks honest.  And working yours truly’s off as well.  Nothing like a trial by fire!

There’s a New Librarian in town. Exciting, isn’t it.

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Hi, folks.  My name is Kurt Schriever and I’m going to be pitching in here at the Library.  Our Peerless Leader hasn’t been entirely in the pink lately, and in the interests of all us OTRR folks has had to spread himself thinner than an anorexic tapeworm, so I’m hoping to provide a little relief that’ll let him focus on areas where he’s most needed and keep himself in fighting trim.  No fear, though… while I’m getting up to speed he’ll be keeping an eye out to make sure I ain’t trashing the joint, and even after that he’ll still be working on the Library a good deal, providing guidance and direction and smacking me around when I need it.
/
/
/
/I would like this Library to be a little more of an activist’s realm, and echo some of Jim’s past comments asking for your feedback.  In particular, everyone who makes productive use of this archive can also play an important role in its care and feeding, and I’d strongly urge that y’all pitch in what you can where you can.  The Library’s become a reasonably mature creature at this point, but there remain plenty of gaps, be they entire series or individual episodes… maybe some time you might like to check your holdings against what you see here and if you spot an opportunity to help out, write us with what you have and we can discuss getting it added to the stocks.  Or if you’re downloading Library content… and listening to it!…. you may on (hopefully rare) occasion note a mislabeled file, a misspelling, a broken link or an instance of truly evil sound quality.  Please don’t just curse the dark, but help us to make as many incremental improvements as possible.
/
/
/
/OK, enough soap-box from the presumptuous new kid.  What I really wanted to mention is that there’s some more new material that you might like to check out:
/
/
/
/ADDITIONAL SHOWS ADDED:
/
/
/
/– Columbia Workshop:  58 new episodes added, a sizable percentage of improvement
/
/
/
/– Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street:  14 new shows, including some First Song retitling based on reviewing each added show.  You’ll see these names reflected in Otter shortly, too.
/
/
/
/NEW SERIES:
/
/
/
/– The Gulf Spray Show
/
/
/
/– Plantation Jubilee
/
/
/
/Enjoy the shows, wish me luck (hey, it’s in your own best interest…), be a little patient with my rookie transgressions, and write often!  (The mailbox is still a direct line to Jim, but we expect to change to a shared email address soon… meanwhile, he’ll forward items to me as needed.)

A New Way Of Showing Members??

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Good Morning Library users!
/
/
/
/If downloads continue at their present pace, and new
/
/borrowers admitted, January will prove to be the biggest
/
/month we’ve ever experienced!
/
/OTRR and its friends are proud to bring you these FREE
/
/series  and episodes, and we trust that you are enjoying
/
/them.
/
/
/
/As you know, to date, we have kept up with members
/
/by showing their name, city, and state on the member-
/
/ship list.  A number of people are hesitate about
/
/revealing this for fear that they might wind up on a
/
/spam list.
/
/
/
/In a conversation with the new Librarian(who will
/
/introduce himself shortly), we thought about having
/
/a Google map where members would just stick a pin in
/
/showing where they reside, but with no personal
/
/information attached to it.
/
/
/
/Is this something that you would prefer?  If so, please
/
/respond to this post.

Re: Adding New users

Monday, January 18th, 2010

I finally found out the reason for the increase in the
/
/number of people requesting library cards.
/
/
/
/A computer magazine listed the Library in one of it’s
/
/issues and recommended people to take advantage of
/
/this!
/
/
/
/Needless to say this has created a huge problem for me.
/
/Currently, I am issuing cards that were requested on
/
/January 2nd.  So you can see how far behind I am.  I am
/
/only issuing 20 new cards per day so as not to overload
/
/our server with requests.
/
/Some important things will soon be happening here, so
/
/please read the blogs!

Broken Links Fixed

Monday, January 18th, 2010

I’ve finally got around to fixing the broken links in the
/
/’I’ folder.  Sorry for the delay.
